A Hunter's Dream
Part 2 of 3

N

OW THAT I took a bear, I
figured I would bag my buck on
the first day in Wildlife Management
Unit 2C, because over the past two
years, that's what I have done. But
this year was different. I was going
for a Triple Trophy. I didn't think it
would be hard, because every year
I've hunted since being a mentored
youth hunter, I've killed a buck.
Ever since I was little, Dad told
me about a kid who took the Triple
Trophy. We always talked about how
cool it would be for me to get a bear,
a buck and a gobbler all in the same
license year. And in the 2011 season, I had what my Uncle Tim, my
dad, and I all thought would be the

hardest - a 439-pound
bear that I shot close
to home.
For the deer season
opener, I planned to go
to a neighboring field
on private property, a
favorite spot of mine.
My Uncle Tim set up a
tree stand in a big pine
tree, and at 6:30 a.m.
on the opener, Uncle
Tim picked me up and
took me to the field.
We didn't see a deer
that day, though.
The next day, my
dad took me to the
tree stand behind our
home that we've killed
five bucks out of over
the years. Nothing
came. Through the
last Friday of the
season, there were only two days that
I didn't hunt after school until quitting time. I did see a buck one day,
but I didn't have a shot at it.
I was skeptical when my dad woke
me up on the last day of the season.
We waited for Uncle Tim, because
even though my dad and I had permission to hunt on the neighboring
property, Uncle Tim is a closer friend
with the landowner. We jumped a
deer walking in, but couldn't see
whether it was a buck or doe. As I
was climbing into the tree stand, I
glanced out into the field and spotted white antlers in the waist-high
goldenrod. I whispered to Dad, who
was already in the stand. He looked
