be sloppy and kill a deer occasionally. It
happens. But you can't excel in hunting
without abiding focus and commitment. Mistakes - too noisy, poor use
of prevailing wind, bad approach to
your stand tree - almost always reduce
your opportunities to take deer. So pay
attention to everything. It matters all
the time.
If it sounds to
you like using a
portable tree stand
can be challenging,
then I'm coming
through loud and
clear. But look at
it like operating a
chainsaw, or lawnmower, or driving a
car or motorcycle.
They, too, come
with a long list of
dos and don'ts.
Each becomes,
almost at once,
more dangerous
when its operator is distracted, overconfident or unprepared.
Most days I sit in my tree stands - I
have three old-school Loggy Bayous -
as comfortably as I do on my rocking
recliner watching football on Sundays.
By the time I'm seated, bow or gun
across my lap, I know I've taken every
step possible to ensure my safety. I'm at
ease, focused on my surroundings, but
mindful of every edge on the platform
upon where my feet rest. This feeling
of security comes from going through a
mental checklist that has kept me safe
for decades. That checklist includes
the manufacturers' recommendations
for using their products safely. As with
most things, repetition breeds familiarity, and in this case that awareness

ensures your safety.
If you're looking for a portable tree
stand, talk to some of your friends or
relatives to get an idea of what might
work best for you. Most climbing
stands use cutting bars or rubberized
chains - plus your offsetting weight
- to hold onto tree trunks. The older
Loggy Bayous I use incorporate a steel
band covered by
a rubber sleeve. It
climbs incredibly
quietly, but cannot be used - ever
- on wet trees.
The climbers with
cutting-bars sink
into the outer bark
on a tree; they can't
used on smoothbarked trees. Tree
stands that cause
damage to trees
are illegal on state
lands. Stands with
the rubberized
chain works well in most rough-bark
climbing situations. My favorite trees
for climbing are white oaks, for their
forgiving, softer bark, which muffles
climbing sounds. Red maples and red
oaks also are good choices.
When you pick a tree, try to select
one that is near evergreen cover that
will help hide you, but won't impede
your climb or obstruct your shooting.
Cover in the front is my preference,
but I'll settle for evergreen cover behind me to help break up my form if
that's all I can get. Try to steer clear of
using a tree that doesn't offer nearby
breakup cover or isn't at least as wide
as your shoulders. You'll stick out like
something that doesn't belong. And
deer will see you!
