Backyard

I
T all started with a fenced-in garden
12 feet by 12 feet by 5½ feet high. It
was an ordinary backyard garden. By
the end of the summer, it provided me
with an abundant crop of green peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers. I was
pleased to have such a tasty bounty.
The following summer I followed
the same program, but also added zucchini squash and carrots. I thought my
garden additions were complete until
one day I saw a birdfeeder in the shape
of a bell. What a wonderful idea to feed
the birds and watch them come and go,
I thought.
It was fun watching the different
birds peck at the seed bell. Nevertheless,
unfortunately, the joy was short-lived.
The bell stayed there until the squirrels
found out how to bite off the exposed
plastic rod holding the seeds together.
I think they waited until I was inside

to initiate their heist. It was taken in
a matter of seconds. Like a thief in
the night, it was stolen from the fence
never to be seen again.
T h e f o l l o w i n g s u m m e r, I
got smarter. I bought a square
wire cage and affixed it to the
high-garden fence. I also bought - and
have replaced often - seed blocks compressed with sunflower seeds, safflower
seeds, peanuts and millet. I place them
in the cage and reinforce the little door
with a small metal clasp to protect the
coveted contents from the greedy and
ingenious squirrels.
As the birds feed, I can hear many
different songs and calls. The raucous
call of the blue jay does not seem to fit
its magnificent plumage, but sometimes
the bird will surprise me with a very
short and sweet song. It is almost like
a whistle.
The goldfinches and purple finches
that come to the finch sock have an
unmistakable voice as they chatter to
each other. It's almost like the sound
of an old-fashioned screen-door opening. If I close my eyes, I can hear it,
wee-eep, wee-eep. The sounds take me
back to my childhood summers and
now lets me know who is coming in
to the feeder.
One summer night, I heard a bird
break out in song. The song was so
sweet and melodic it caught my attention immediately. After the short song
was finished, I looked around to find
the owner of the "voice." It was none
other than a common robin. I never
would have considered it a songbird.
