More with Less
VER the past year, I've been adjusting to the changes in Pennsylvania's
mandatory Hunter-Trapper Education course. Dropping from 12 to six hours
seemed like a lot to me and many others. But it made a two-day event one. That
was a real plus for me and my family, and it was an immediate hit among those
who attend and parent drivers. But were all of us being a little selfish? After all,
making safe hunters is what the course is all about, not convenience.
The course was streamlined with a more direct curriculum and its video
content was updated to more adequately resonate in the 21st century, as well as
educate - and at times entertain - our new young hunters. How to hunt safely and
ethically remains the course's core, but its delivery has improved markedly. In the
hands of instructors who follow the curriculum and stay on schedule, it's a body
of work that teaches unlike anything I've seen in my 30 years as an instructor.
In my most recent class - the third I've given with the new curriculum - Joe
Yakobosky, his daughter Emily and I instructed 72 students March 8 at the
Friedensburg Fish and Game, a club that has supported hunter-education for
decades. It provides free snacks, lunch and even hunting licenses for all new
junior hunters in the class.
Whether the students were gifted, enjoyed the instruction, or simply felt athome comfortable at Friedensburg isn't clear. What was noticeable was student
commitment and focus. They came to learn. There was no drifting, no distractions. Breaks and lunch were short, even the review. The class rolled on like a
perfectly timed engine.
When we were done with the 65-question test and grading, the results overwhelmed us: 34 students had perfect scores; 20 had one wrong; eight had two;
eight had three; one had four; and one had seven. It was about as good as it gets
in teaching.
So what happened? I like to believe that this class - the best I've ever taught
to date - achieved so much because our new curriculum is so on the mark. Surely
the students were bright; the instructors capable; the setting conducive. But
really, the only significant change in our team's past five years of teaching was
the curriculum. Our third time through it, everything clicked.
The new curriculum is a big step forward, one that assures our young hunters are better educated and safer afield. That will have a profound impact on
hunting's future and how non-hunters perceive us. More with less. Outstanding!
