forest habitat are optimal areas to plant
because they provide quality brooding
habitat. These areas are seeded using
the Ruffed Grouse Society Trail Mix,
comprised of a blend of various clovers.
The plots are mowed and fertilized
periodically to prolong the beneficial
aspects of the openings. Trees on the
edges of the herbaceous areas are cut as
needed to ensure the clover, trefoil and
other beneficial forbs receive adequate
amounts of sunlight.
Management of existing herbaceous
openings will continue and new openings will be created where deemed
appropriate to provide quality grouse
brooding habitat.
New herbaceous habitats will be
planted through timber-sale activities
and by clearing small pockets within
black-birch stands. These sites are
converted to forest openings through
bulldozing and planting, increasing the
habitat value and diversity of the area.
A third GMA goal is to improve
existing crabapple-hawthorn
"orchards" and conifer patches, and
plant additional areas to provide more
fall foods and thermal cover. Existing
areas of this makeup will be expanded,
and birch stands will be transitioned to
fruit orchards or conifers. These habitat
patches are periodically trimmed to let
more daylight in and the fruit trees are
pruned as needed to increase viability
and fruit production and their value to
ruffed grouse.
Project AccomPlishments
Since the start of the GMA five
years ago, numerous habitat acres
on State Game Lands 73 have been
improved for ruffed grouse. Food and
Cover crews have regenerated four
blocks or patches totaling 33 acres,

while an additional 11-acre area of
aspen and oak was harvested through a
commercial timber sale. These areas are
all regenerating well and are starting to
provide quality young forest habitat for
grouse and other species. They should
provide good grouse habitat for the
next 10 to 20 years. A sixth treatment
area consisted of a 10-acre oak stand,
where a crop-tree release was conducted to improve the quality of the
future acorn producers.
During all these treatments, various
beneficial tree and shrub species
were retained for their habitat value
and day-lighted to increase their
vigor and increase mast production.
A conifer stand also was released and
a site cleared adjacent to crabapplehawthorn orchard in preparation for
future plantings of fruit trees.
Over the past three years, a food
plot, retired skid trail, two log landings,
and a timber haul road were limed,
