Early Season Special Indeed
I cocked the hammer.
And, ever so slowly, I leaned forward until some part of my left arm posted
solid against the plastic folding table in front of me. There, I settled.
My oldest youngster has done some growing since last October. As I write
this, it really wouldn't surprise me if the now-14-year-old connected - offhand,
propped or otherwise - with any shot on any deer anywhere. The boy has strength
I'll never know.
But last fall, and still growing into his .243, it seemed good strategy to greet
daybreak on the Special Firearms opener by toting a table and chairs to the edge
of that heavily crossed corner of cropland before making our stand there.
After a stretch of somewhat scant action, I was happy and relieved to have a
solid surface in front of us as a doe and her lone young walked out of cover and
into the open spaces ahead.
I saw them first and whispered an alert to the young hunter. As he raised the
scope, I did, too. And I, with my inline, pulled back the hammer without even
thinking about it.
Fully cocked and well propped, with a pair of standing deer in my field of view,
I became the most observant of observers, ready to deliver any backup necessary
at moment's notice.
But I wouldn't be the one to start things off. We had somebody for that.
With my finger nowhere near the trigger, and my scope more fixated on
detecting impact than centering the crosshairs, I remained ready.
Very much ready. Wholly ready. But no shot came.
Then, an eternity later, booooooffff. A shot, but no movement anywhere. A
clean miss on the doe. The deer remained still for only a moment before the doe
bolted, dragging the youngster with her.
I figured they were gone. But they stopped after only 20 yards, again presenting
good shots. Again, I'm ready. Again waiting, hammer still cocked. This time,
the crosshairs settle behind the shoulder. And this time, my finger is nearer the
trigger. It begins to trace an imaginary outline along its curve. I suppress all
instincts to shoot. And I never hear another shot.
Instead, the first sound my ears detect is an expression of grief that one got
away. I've been there before and have said the same things. I'll be there again,
and so will he. But for today, I'm glad we got this chance.
And I'm even more grateful for that closing day on Saturday, when my dad
and two oldest boys, carrying rifles, and muzzleloader me, made for one fine
doe-hunting group.
