The main disadvantage of a
climbing stand is a straight
tree is required, overhead
limbs limit the height of the
stand and, most importantly,
available cover is usually
higher than the hunter,
exposing his movements to
the deer. Fixed-position tree
stands can easily be located
above branches, allowing the hunter
to take advantage of available cover.
Disadvantages include the need for
steps or ladders to climb the tree and
set-up normally requires more time.
Ladder stands offer increased safety, but
disadvantages include their physical
weight, the fact they often require two
people to set up and that they are not
easily moved. An additional drawback
of each of the above stands is that a
tree is required for set-up, and often
the right tree is not available in the
desired location. Bowhunters often
compromise by hunting from a position
because a tree is available, even if it
doesn't offer the best shot.
Another solution is a tripod or
quad-pod, which offers the advantage
of positioning an elevated hunting
platform anywhere without the need
for a tree. The disadvantage again is
the physical weight of the stand and
the difficulty of quickly relocating it.
Tripods are best used in thick areas
where trees are not readily available.
In my personal hunting "toolbox,"
I have several of each of the above
stands, and use all of them each season.
Depending upon the conditions, I
simply select the stand best suited for
the job. However, in the past several

years I have also added a variety of
blinds. I have several pop-up ground
blinds, as well as "wrap-around" blinds
that can be used on the ground or in
a tree. Adding blinds to my arsenal
allows me to hunt in situations where
other stands simply do not work.
Ground blinds have seen a rapid
growth in popularity. As hunters are
aging, many have moved from tree
stands to ladder stands for safety
reasons, and now many are opting for
a ground blind. Ground blinds are also
well suited for hunting with a young or
inexperienced hunter where movement
is a concern. Ground blinds also are
great for the experienced hunter
looking for mobility and comfort when
using a swivel chair inside the blind.
While all of these reasons are great,
my main interest in ground blinds
is based on my ability to position
myself for the best shot in spite of the
conditions. Remember, the ultimate
goal is to be within your effective range.
While I might find a tree to place my
stand in, if it gives me a 40-yard shot,
I'm much better off using a ground
blind where my shot will be 25 yards
or less. If I can effectively locate my
tree stand in a position that offers me
a shot 25 yards or less, the tree stand
