would be my first choice. However, if
that is not possible, I look for some way
to get closer. While I am confident of
my shooting ability out to 40 yards,
each yard I can get closer to my target
the greater my chances of a good hit.
At times the tool I need to do that is a
ground blind. Let's look at some of the
advantages of a ground blind.
A ground blind is an enclosure
hiding the hunter's movement, making
drawing a bow undetected much easier.
Ground blinds are light and easy to
transport. The new hub-style blinds
can be set up or taken down in seconds,
making them very convenient. Most
quality blinds manufactured today have
a "hub" system that allows the sides and
top of the blind to be simply pulled or
pushed into position giving the blind
its shape and holding the exterior
fabric tight. The hub system is the most
advanced and the simplest to use.
Under the right conditions
ground blinds can be set up and used
immediately, although it's best to allow
some time for the deer to get used to
them; two days is more than adequate.
Blinds can be used in thick cover or in
the open. Add up all of these features
and you can easily use a ground blind
in areas where it might be
difficult to use a tree stand.
While ground blinds can
be set in the open, I prefer
setting them in cover if
possible. If they are exposed,
I add some brush to the
outside of the blind to break
up the shape. Remember,
though, you cannot cut brush on public
land, and permission is needed to do
so on private land. While most camo
blends in, the outline of a blind, like
a hunter's outline, is what draws the
animal's attention. Most blinds offer tie
straps on the exterior so that brush can
be tied to break up the shape. There
is no need to place any brush on the
roof of the blind, but make sure some
of the cover you add is higher than the
blind to break up the roof line. The
roof of a blind is not designed to carry
weight, and if loaded down it can and
will collapse.
Although it would be desirable to
shoot 360 degrees when hunting out of
a ground blind, that is not always the
case. I never open up all the windows
completely, because if a deer can see
completely through the blind it could
spot movement inside. If the window
behind you is closed, your shape will
blend with the black interior of the
blind. If the window behind you is
open, you may be silhouetted against
the light behind the blind.
When setting up a ground blind,
make sure you clear the ground of
obstructions inside the blind. While
you can sit on the ground or kneel
