Good examples of a
double-action semi-auto
are the Beretta M92, CZ
75 or the Ruger P90.
Some people don't
like the change in trigger
pull from double-action
to single-action, so they
go with a double-action
semi-auto that will
have the same length
and weight of pull for
every shot, because the
hammer is automatically
lowered each time the
gun cycles.
Good examples of this are the
Seecamp LWS or the Taurus PT22.
Last, there are the striker-action
semi-autos that use a spring-loaded
striker rather than a hammer and
firing pin.
The striker is compressed and
released by the trigger to fire the arm.
Some of these sidearms use a doubleaction trigger, which compresses the
striker throughout its entire length
before releasing it to fire, as with the
Taurus PT models. The nice thing
about this is that if you have a misfire,
the trigger can be pulled again to hit
the primer a second time, before having
to clear the chamber.
Then there are the single-action
strikers such as the Glock and
Springfield XD that have "mechanical
triggers."
With this trigger system, the striker
is partially compressed when the
action is cycled, which leaves the
trigger with a shorter, lighter pull to

finish up the compression/release.
In case of a misfire, the action needs
to be manually cycled to clear the
chamber and reset the trigger.
For those who reload,
however, please note that Glock
does not warranty its firearms if
lead bullets are used; barrels have been
known to burst.
Safeties on striker-fired pistols can
be of the "trigger actuated" type, which
is a spring-loaded release lever on the
trigger, or a thumb lever safety The new
XD has both.
That about wraps up this two-part
series about handguns. There are other
types of pistols, such as the single-shots,
including the Thompson Center, and
bolt actions such as the Savage Striker,
but this type is more of a specialty item
for those wanting something different.
But no matter what you choose, for
safety, make sure that you clearly
understand the arm before going to the
range.
