Regarding that hunt, and others
including his taking a 17-pound Pike
County gobbler to fill his final tag in the
2002-03 season, Savage speaks humbly,
sometimes needing prompting to go into
more detail.
Given the fact he really didn't try to
draw attention to his accomplishment, he
said he can understand why that, outside
of his circle of friends and family, it went
unrecognized for so long.
"How's anybody going to know, if I'm
the only one to know about?" he asked
recently.
Savage, himself, never heard of the feat
being duplicated until he read in Game
News about Leon Graham, of Nauvoo,
completing the Quadruple Trophy, plus
a spring gobbler, in the 2013-14 season.
Up until then, hunting seasons would
come and go without any outdoor publication reporting on a Quadruple Trophy
season, and he figured he remained not
only the first, but the only one to do it.
Others had followed, however.

Quadruple Trophy honors wouldn't
belong exclusively to Francis Savage Jr.
for long.
In September 2003, Mark Colpo,
of Sarver, was drawn for a bull tag, an
event that would bring about immediate
lifestyle changes.
Weekends became a time to head
to his camp in Hicks Run, Elk County,
which was within the very zone he'd
hunt elk.
Scouting trip after scouting trip - six or
seven weekends in all, Colpo said - things
looked promising.
"I was seeing bulls everywhere and I
thought, 'This isn't going to be hard at
all,'" he said.
Colpo had consulted one of the local
guides, who said that with the scouting
time Colpo had put in, the bulls he'd
seen and his knowledge of the zone's
boundaries, he likely could guide himself
as good as anybody else could. With that,
it was settled. Colpo's own Old Boy Camp
would serve as his outfitter.
Colpo's run at the Quadruple Trophy
wouldn't wait for elk season, however. On
the morning of Oct. 23, while hunting
near his home in South Buffalo Township, Armstrong County, Colpo took a
7-point with his bow.
Later he would say he was lucky to get
the buck.
"That was one of the few days I hunted
because I was scouting for elk all of the
time," he said.
With Colpo hoping to extend his good
luck into elk season, the fact remained
he'd been seeing fewer elk. The rut, most
certainly, was off. And on the Saturday
