stories. So it's not easy for predators to
catch up with them. But the predators
that prey on them are legion: coyotes,
bobcats, red foxes, even black bears and
fishers. They also include red-tailed
hawks, great horned owls and weasels.
Hares have always had adversaries. It's the plight of any prey species.
It's why they typically have more
than one litter of young annually, but
fewer litters than rabbits. But not even
stepped-up recruitment has seemed to
help hares in the Commonwealth's
northern tier - their core range - for
some time. They're holding their own
in some areas, but they're really not
expanding their range into new territory. That's why this research is trying
to sort out what ties hares to habitat
seasonally. Food? Cover? What is the
age and composition of the habitat?
When are hares there? Day? Night?
Summer? Winter?

Gigliotti and her team have been
using snow tracking to locate and set
traps for hares in areas where they are
known to be established. That's what
led them to State Game Lands 38 and
29. They set live traps on fresh sign using alfalfa pellets and chunks of apple.
Traps are checked daily and shut if
precipitation approaches. Setting on
fresh tracks has worked well, given the
number of hares caught to date. But last
winter's record-setting cold and deep
snows surely compelled some hares to
visit - and in some cases revisit - the
baited traps.
Being caught in a live-trap and
fitted with a GPS telemetry collar apparently isn't the worst experience for
snowshoes. At least one last winter
had been caught 10 times. Some hares
willingly eat a slice of apple while being
held right out of the trap. Of course,
none want to stay when they're free
