The excitement really hit me the moment I stepped through the gymnasium
doors for the 2014 NASP tournament.
My eyes widened as I gazed in amazement at the number of archers standing
in a line that was too long to see in its
entirety without turning my head.
Luckily, it would be a while before
my flight.
Three hours is a long time to spend
standing around listening to the thudding of 250 arrows a minute.
The first part of the wait consisted
of walking around, reading and much
conversation. As time passed, I gradually reached the point where I simply
watched the arrows fly.
I felt every pull, every place my
muscles tensed, and the smooth single
movement of releasing the string.
Two hours in, it turned out the
tournament was behind schedule. Two
more hours of waiting. At some point I
ate lunch, but even that didn't interrupt
my thought process.
Whistle, lift bow, grab arrow, nock,
raise bow, draw.
Focus, feel the string on nose, focus,
taste the leather of glove resting at the
corner of mouth, focus, aim, fire.
My fingers lightly brush my skin as
the string is released in one fluid, liquid
motion.
Freeze. Only when I hear the arrow
strike the target do I relax my muscles
and lower my bow to rest on my foot.
For five seconds, I assess the precision
and accuracy of my shot, and I use this
information to determine what change
to my aiming point is necessary to make
my next shot a bull's-eye. That was
only one of five arrows in one of eight
rounds in one flight, but the process is
the same for every arrow. My technique
