iridescence. Hens should appear lighter
than gobblers due to brown-tipped
breast feathers.
s Look for a red head, bald of
feathers. Some dominant hens can
have a slightly reddish-looking head,
but it is normally bluish-gray. All hens
have some small feathers up the back
of their neck.
s Note the bird's behavior. If it
looks like a hen and acts like a hen,
it's probably a hen, despite the beard.
To some, it may seem contradictory
to place this emphasis on protecting
hens in the spring when hens are
harvested in much greater numbers in
the fall seasons.
However, differentiating the sexes in
the fall is difficult, particularly for the
young 4- to 5-month-old birds.
Additionally, outside of habitat
improvement, adjusting season length
in the fall is the primary way we manage
turkey populations in Pennsylvania.
When large numbers of hens are
harvested in the spring, it throws a
wrench into the gears of that system.
Not only that, consider that a hen
in the fall must survive the remainder
of the fall, the winter, and the spring
before it can produce any poults that
might make it to the next fall.
A hen harvested in the spring had
beaten the odds, and was possibly
already nesting.
Giving her a chance to raise her
brood gives us more birds to hunt in
seasons to come and, if we're lucky, the
enjoyment of watching her brood grow
through the summer months.
Audubon's first painting in Birds of
America was of a gobbler, simply titled
"Wild Turkey."
He called his painting of the
bearded hen, "Great American Hen
and Young."
He obviously liked turkeys, and held
hens in high esteem.
And while we don't have to exalt
the hen turkey as Audubon did, a fresh
perspective on bearded hens is good for
our wild turkey resource.
Dear Bob D'Angelo,
Like many others, I look forward to my Game News arriving each month in
the mail. I began receiving the magazine in 1967, and except for missing it while
living out of state a few years, I've cherished every issue. Your story "You Never
Know" in the September issue brought tears to my eyes from laughing.
On another note, after relocating to New Mexico and then Florida in 2002, I
soon realized how much I took for granted the hunting in Pennsylvania. Being
forced to join hunting clubs on leased properties, I quickly found out that this
was not the freedom I had experienced in Pennsylvania. In 2010, I finally made it
back to Pennsylvania for late flintlock season and was so grateful to be cradling
my Hawkins rifle on a scenic snow-covered state game lands.
