for the next 10 days, but commitments
to hunt with friends and family in other
places delayed my opportunity to return
until the end of the week.
On Tuesday, May 6, as I was driving
to my daughter's house in Powells Valley
at about noon, I noticed a huge plume of
smoke rising out to the east.
The burn was happening, and it
looked to be massive!
Smoke filled the sky, as 600 acres
of game lands were treated with fire to
control invasive plants and to promote
the growth of desired habitat.
A "temporary inconvenience for permanent improvement" situation was at
hand, and I thought back to the article on
burns, admittedly with some doubt that
a late-week return to that area would be
productive.
Perhaps I'd have to change my plans
and hunt a different area later in the
week.
Later that day, and throughout the
week, it was pretty clear that many
viewed the timing of the burn negatively.
Social media was alive with comments
of "They're burning up the turkey nests!"
and "hope there are no fawns born yet!"
as well as the occasional "there goes my
spring season, won't be anything left in
Greenland!"
I scanned and posted Bob's article, in
hopes of sharing the educational material
to alleviate some of the anxiety in my
circle of hunting friends. I tried to post
reassuring comments explaining how any
turkey nests destroyed by the fire would
be renested and that the fire doesn't burn
fast enough to threaten mobile wildlife
such as white-tailed deer.
At my friend Jeff's barbershop on
Thursday, May 8, the discussion turned
to the game-lands burn, and my friend
Keith was echoing some of the concerns
that had been posted online.
I remember playfully saying, "I'll head
in there, Keith, and I'll send you a photo
of a gobbler tomorrow!"
We like to agitate each other now and
then, like good friends do.
But now, I was committed to giving
the area I had scouted with the help of
my dogs a serious try, and it was going to
be just three days after 600 acres were
burned.
Was Ned Smith correct, would wildlife already be using the area? Maybe
Keith was going to get the last laugh this
time. I'd find out on Friday.
I awoke about 3:45 a.m. Friday,
weather forecasts were calling for a great
weather day and I was anxious to see if
the turkeys were still in the area that
had been burned. As I entered the area,
the pre-dawn stillness was ripe with the
smell of smoke, and as dawn approached
I could see wisps of fog rising among the
leafless trees.
Only it wasn't fog, the ground was
"I've never seen a burned-over forest that didn't become a whitetail
haven, and I've often wondered why. True, in time these fire-blackened
hills are overgrown with succulent plants, but that doesn't explain why
deer begin frequenting such places almost before the smoke settles."
