Going home

UR FAMILIES often would get toto
gether on weekends, holidays, or just
whenever.
We spent a lot of time together. But
when we hunted together, the group always
broke up by midday as Vic headed home
early.
Until more recently, I could never understand why.
Maybe some of the reason our families
spent so much time together is because we
matched one another so well.
The men of the house, Vic and my
father, John, were best friends. Vic's wife,
Kande, and my mom, Charlene, also had
much in common and enjoyed each other's
company. The eldest sons, my brother Nate
and Vic's son Todd, grew inseparable.
It was like looking into a mirror - until
you got to the second born.
I was left awkwardly staring at my smiling, blonde "reflection" - Lindsay.
This obligated pairing offered me a
front-row seat to Lindsay's latest gymnastics lessons, and when she wasn't twirling
or swirling, I was ordered to a desk in her
play version of school. I must say Lindsay's
classroom was more work than play, and
more demanding than the real thing.

And, finally, when school was dismissed,
Lindsay made me her personal target,
endlessly and exhaustingly chasing me
throughout the house. There was no doubt
I was Lindsay's first crush.
Even my dull senses picked up on a
protective father's watchful eye. As he patrolled playtime, Vic would joke, "Marsh,
someday you'll be happy my lil' Lindsay is
chasing you."
As often was the case, Vic was right. But
she never did.
I remember Vic as a truck driver, working
long hours and picking up extra shifts for
more than 30 years to support his family. I
can still hear the squeak beneath my fingers,
as I ran my hand along Vic's immaculate red
truck, parked perfectly in his garage.
But I also remember Vic as a deer hunter,
and this is where he really inspired me.
Dad and Vic included their boys on deerhunting excursions, particularly adventures
during the late flintlock season. While I
do not recall Vic ever shooting a deer, I do
fondly reminisce about those hunts.
