There's an art to making gun barrels. And the right
barrel can make a big difference in accuracy.
seams, hence Damascus barrels, and some
were made with soft steels that could be
drilled easily.
I'm not sure who first discovered that
spinning an object in flight gave improved
accuracy and distance, over having it just
pushed out, but around the mid-15th century, Jaspard Zoller, of Vienna, developed
barrel rifling - lands and grooves - that
imparted a spin on a projectile, improving
ballistics dramatically.
The rifling process, though, wouldn't
become feasible for mass production until
the 18th century.
Most rifles made prior to that time
were smoothbores, which were accurate
only to 100 yards.
Once bore rifling came on the scene,
that distance doubled, and once the
round-ball projectile developed into a
conical projectile, or Minié ball, that
distance again dramatically increased.
At that time, lead was the only practical metal that was used to make projectiles, and being a soft metal, it would
easily conform to the size of the bore given
the pressure of the black powder.
Consequently, consistent internal barrel dimensions were not that critical for
practical accuracy.
But black powder and lead bullets had
their limitations.
If lead is driven at speeds faster than
1,300 fps, it leaves deposits in the barrel's
lands and grooves.
As more shots are fired, more deposits
are left behind, and accuracy progressively
degrades.
Black powder is a low-pressure propellant with a single-constant-burning rate
(depending on the size of the granules)

that only increases velocity if more of it
is used.
Cartridges with greater volume and
firearms with longer barrels were needed
for increased charges, which were limited
by firearm design, metallic strength of the
action and barrel, and cartridge size.
In the 1890s, with the development of
stronger steels that could withstand the
higher pressures of the new, more efficient
smokeless powders, as well as the metaljacketed bullet, that focus on improving
ballistics settled on barrel-making.
Jacketed bullets did not conform to
the "not so exact" internal barrel dimensions, so consistency in barrel dimensions
became more critical.
Steels have come a long way since the
1890s, and so has barrel manufacturing.

The "handgonne" was the first firearm
to evolve from the expanded use of black
powder as a propellant.
