southpaw, he'd designed and made
a tang safety years before Savage
offered one. Aside from the Savage,
Ned owned one shotgun, a nice L. C.
Smith, and a .22 rifle.
"Who needs any more?" he'd ask,
and the scads of deer, grouse, pheasants and squirrels he brought home-
even an elk, from what I believe
was the only hunt Ned ever made in
Idaho - made the question logical.
That hunt is worth telling about,
for it shows what kind of a guy Ned
was. After a few days without anyone
in Ned's group firing a shot, Ned
killed an average-size bull.
He field-dressed it and was hiking
back to camp when a huge basketracked monster ambled past, a short
distance in front of him. It was the
kind of trophy you could hunt three
lifetimes for without seeing. It would
have been an easy shot and any of his
buddies would have been glad to tag
his smaller bull.
But Ned never thought about
shooting the monster. His license
allowed him one elk, he'd tagged
one, and that was that. Ned didn't
do illegal things.
That didn't mean he'd never take
part in a practical joke, though. One
time he and I were invited down to
Remington Farms, near Chestertown,
Md., for a few days of goose hunting.
A number of outdoor writers were
there. One of them was Clare Conley,
who served separate stints as editor
of Field & Stream and Outdoor Life.
Conley was an above-average shotgunner. He also happened to be the
most competitive person I ever met.
He just couldn't stand for anyone to
beat him at anything.
One day Ned, an average shotgunner, and I happened to get our limits
of geese early so we went with several others to the famous Aw Shucks
tower to see how many claybirds we
could break.
This tower is on a hilltop, the
shooting stations in a "U" under
thick trees below, with a pond still
farther below. The birds were hard
to see, a shooter's first inkling of one
often being a plop as it sank into the
pond. At the sound, the shooter invariably would shout "Aw, Shucks!"
Or something like that.
This gave the game its name.
If anyone happens to break 23 out
of a round of 25, his or her name and
score are inscribed on a brass plate
in the lodge. In decades of shooting,
only a handful - all nationally recognized shotgunners - have broken
25 straight.
Ned wasn't one of them. Not
even with his L. C. Smith. But in
mid-morning, as we sat in the panel
truck going back to the lodge, I had
an inspiration that broke me up.
