VOLLEY of five shots echoed
across the landscape. With each
report, a grouse was getting
closer. It would pass at about 20 yards if
my three hunting companions continued
to punch holes in the air.
The four of us had been turkey hunting
all morning without seeing so much as a
single scratching. We were within 150
yards of the cabin, when the leader of
our crew tried to take out his frustration
on ole' ruff.
That was easier said than done.
The bird looked like a blur of brown
mottled feathers when it came into view.
I swung the heavy 12-gauge double past
the speedster much farther than I normally would for a pheasant and pulled
the trigger.
The action seemed to go into slow
motion.
A stream of feathers poured out of the
bird as it lost altitude like one of those
B-52s seen in a World War II film clip.

I stood there amazed while watching
my first grouse fall into some tall grass on
the border of a large woodlot. Although
this hunt took place more than 40 years
ago, it still seems as though it was just
yesterday.
I've taken more than 100 ruffed
grouse since that day, and the thrill still
continues. None of the grouse I've shot
were taken with the aid of a dog. All were
taken while I hunted alone or with one
or two other hunters.
My knowledge of grouse habitat and
staying alert in the woods has helped me
greatly over the years.
There were few grouse residing where
I grew up in Chester County.
Shortly after taking my first one, however, I discovered an about 2,000-acre
state game lands in Chester and Berks
counties that, at the time, had a decent
grouse population.
It was there where I began to hone
my skills.
I can recall being caught daydreaming
so often it became frustrating.
As soon as I let down my guard, a
grouse would take off, sometimes, within
close range.
