Pennsylvania's elk herd is approaching
1,000 animals and its recognized range
covers parts of nine counties.

gist, said the Game Commission is trying to grow or stabilize elk numbers on
public land and reduce their numbers
on private lands, particularly on the
western edge of the elk range.
"Habitat is crucial for elk population
growth and expansion, and each year
we slowly add acres of preferred elk
habitat," Banfield said. "We've come
a long way on the elk range over the
past 20 years or so with our conservation partners. But there's still plenty to
do for elk yet."
Their demands on habitat tie elk
closely to lands that have what they
need. They normally prefer to steer
clear of places with people, but if driven
there by habitat deficiencies, they can
and will adjust. No manager wants that,
because elk and civilization are better
off independent of one another.
It's easy to see that improving
habitat has helped our elk population
grow. Today, the herd is estimated to
be between 800 and 1,000 head. And

there's room for growth.
"I think there's definitely room for
more elk, as long as we continue to
provide additional high-quality habitat
- herbaceous and early-successional
forest acres - on public lands and
minimize conflicts on agricultural and
developed areas," Banfield said. "I'd
like see to our elk population increase
slowly over the next decade, so long as
conflicts remain low and our habitat
can support additional elk."
That growth can occur without increasing the size of Pennsylvania's elk
range, particularly in the easternmost
subpopulations, where good habitat
on public lands will support more elk.
The population also might get a
boost if Banfield can sort out whether
something - identifiable or measureable - is impacting elk reproduction.
It's a perception that has been shared
by previous elk biologists over the past
quarter-century.
"I'm still suspicious that something
is off with our production," Banfield
acknowledged. "Given our limited
suite of predators and habitat quality,
it seems like we should see more calves
born on an annual basis. Over the
next few years, I hope to address this
with research. For now, our herd is still
growing. But at a slower rate than I'd
like to see."
Steady habitat improvements in
the eastern reaches of the elk management area - east of Elk Hunt Zones
10 and 12 - are hoped to increase elk
numbers in Clinton, Potter and Centre
counties. In fact, Elk Hunt Zone 13
was added this year to better manage a
subpopulation in Clinton and Centre
counties that has been growing the
past few years.
