toward the laurel that covered the upper
slopes. He reasoned that a pushed deer
would see that thicket as a safe haven,
so posting near the fringes might be
productive.
With a few hundred yards to cover
and with daybreak bringing detail to the
tree trunks, the hunter slowly worked his
way uphill.
Halfway up, he was startled by a flurry
of wingbeats that broke the quiet as a
lone turkey flew down from its roost and
disappeared into the laurel. Exhaling the
held breath, the hunter covered the rest
of the distance and set up near a hemlock
at the edge of the laurel where he had a
good view of the flats below.
The hunter settled into his cold vigil,
listening for the telltale rustle of a laurel
branch as he scanned the oak flats below,
but all was quiet for some time. The only
sounds that broke the silence were the
distant pops of rifle shots and the croak
of a far off raven. Suddenly there was
something closer - the yelp of a turkey in
the laurel. Probably that tom that flew the
roost this morning, he thought.

The hunter turned to watch the hilltop and hoped to get a glimpse of the bird
as it moved through the tangle. A few
more yelps flowed downhill and within a
moment or two the hunter heard movement in the laurel. Expecting to see the
shiny black bird materialize, the hunter
was surprised to see the brown form of a
deer skirting the edge of the laurel.
He quickly rested the forearm of the
little Savage against the hemlock and
watched as the deer cleared the laurel. It
was a small buck!
The hunter squinted through the peep
and settled the front sight on the buck's
shoulder as it stepped into a small opening
50 yards away. Pow! At the shot, the buck
leaped downhill and the hunter tracked
it through the aperture as he levered in
another round. Pow! The buck was gone
before the echo of the second shot faded
away. All was quiet again.
The hunter was confident of his shooting, as he had noticed the buck shudder
ever so slightly at the first shot, and it
seemed that the front sight was glued to
the buck's shoulder as it bounded downWWW.PENNGAMENEWS.COM
