three hunters who had signed on with the
service had taken bulls that were standing
next to bigger bulls.
There was an opportunity here, too.
With the guide's bull hunters now tagged
out, there was an opening for Tyler.
He had to think about it, but decided it
all sounded too good to pass up.

Hunting in the open zone alongside
his dad and guide Jack Manack, of Elk
County Outfitters, Tyler saw his first elk
of the season early Thursday morning - a
pair of bulls, including a big one. They
were a long way out, though. While Tyler
was able to get the larger bull in the scope
for a short time, he was aiming offhand
and it was tough getting the crosshairs to
settle on it.
"I've never been that excited, ever,"
he said.
He tried to relax, but shot and missed.
With the bulls heading away from them
and nearing the boundary between that
open zone and one in which he wasn't
permitted to hunt, the guide talked of
backing off and returning in the evening.
"I probably should have listened to
him," Tyler said.
Instead, he circled the 300-yard patch
of woods to see if he could get ahead of
the bulls.
"Thirty to 40 yards into the woods, I
was already regretting what I did," he said.
The bulls caught onto him quickly and
moved off. Fortunately, they headed away
from the boundary line, but they were
exceptionally wary now.
Ken, who had went with Tyler to the
spot he entered the woods, stayed behind
while Tyler hoofed it up over a hill toward
the field where he first encountered the
bulls. And as Tyler crested the hill, he
bumped into the 7- by 7-point bull, which
was standing at the edge of a tractor path.
It took off running and Tyler placed his
first shot behind the bull's shoulder, then
dropped it with a follow-up.
The bull was estimated to weigh 850
