Gary replied, his grimace clearly
communicating his exasperation with
my ignorance.
Suddenly, I got the picture, and it
wasn't appealing.
"Get the heck out," I said in disbelief.
"How do you do that?"
"We just track 'em, bark trail and
circle 'em right back to where we
jumped 'em," Gary said matter-offactly.
"Get the heck out," I screeched in
complete disbelief while looking for an
escape route.
"You mean you follow rabbit tracks
and bark like a dog," I asked in near
panic.
"Works like a charm," he said
proudly.

As his plan grew unfavorably clear in
my mind, I began looking for the guys in
white suits or the Candid Camera crew.
"Dad and I do it every time there's
a new snow," he explained. "Let's go
jump one and I'll show you how it's

done. Just don't miss when I bring one
round to ya. We'll take turns."
With that, he began kicking briar
clumps among the sumac trees at the
edge of town.
I knew Gary's dad had a reputation
for getting into the sauce on
occasion, but now I was
beginning to wonder if Gary
had had something extra
in his Ovaltine that
morning.
"OK," I agreed. "Let's
start down by the railroad
tracks behind the old mine
buildings. There's always some
rabbits in the briars along the
tracks."
My choice of locations was inspired
totally by pride. I had far too much of
it to let anyone see me involved in such
an unseemly act as this, and the old rail
bed was far enough away to hide our
undertaking from the folks we knew
in town.
"Super!" he chimed as we moved off
toward the tracks.
I followed reluctantly, praying that
no one would see us and wondering
how and why I'd let myself get into this.
In no time we jumped a big cottontail
from the briar patch.
True to his word, Gary set about
demonstrating his "canine" talents.
I couldn't believe my eyes or ears
when he threw his head back and broke
into his best beagle-like tonguing with
a loud Owllll!
As Gary continued to Yipp Yipp
Yipp-Yowll, wow-wow the sound grew
weaker. Looking, I couldn't believe
my eyes, as "Garydog," his short legs a
blur, was hot on the trail of that rousted
bunny.
What a sight he was clad in his dad's
