evolution of the new bullets.
These sabots, though, do not perform
well in the older, deep-groove, roundball barrels because exploding gases
bypass the bullet through the deep
grooves.
The inconsistent pressures lead to
inaccuracy.
Hunters need to experiment with
different types of bullet weights, sabot
types and nose configurations until
one that works best in a particular gun
is found.
But remember, the soft-plastic sabots
do laminate the lands of rifling, and this
will affect the ease of loading, as well
as accuracy, down the road.
To keep the plastic lamination to a
minimum, strong plastic solvents and
a bronze-bore brush will be necessary
when cleaning the barrel.
This lamination problem is the
reason for the rise of the third group of
muzzleloading slugs - the plastic gascheck slugs.
The idea of an easier-to-load gasbase check on a bullet began at the turn
of the last century.
Gunsmiths found that the higher
pressures generated by smokeless
powders would sometimes blow gases
by the soft lead of the slug's base.
To guarantee consistent velocities,
copper was mated to the base of the lead
bullet to more tightly seal the grooves
of the rifling.
Today, a plastic gas check is attached
to the bases of many muzzleloading
bullets. This gives the advantage of
sealing off the blow-by of gases, ease
of loading, and increased accuracy of a
lead bullet, while reducing the amount
of plastic laminate on the rifling lands.

Manufacturers have
struggled for years to get the
jacketed bullet to perform
like a pure lead bullet.
Magnum and Black Belt have plastic
gas checks at their bases, but because
they do not have a plastic-bearing
surface between the bullet and the
bore, they are not considered true
sabots.
The second question to be answered
is one of lethality. What special
characteristics must one consider to
create a load that quickly dispatches a
whitetail? The answer is energy.
The American Hunting Institute,
back in the 1970s, determined that a
round-ball projectile should exhibit
at least 500 foot-pounds of energy to
penetrate the vital organs of a mature
whitetail.
Hunters who hunt in areas where
longer shots are possible will appreciate
the modern advances of bullets for
muzzleloaders, because of their
accuracy and the fact that they carry
enough lethal energy out to longer
distances.
Finally, cost has always been a prime
motivator on the choice of bullets.
Home-cast round balls are cheap, but
the new sabot bullets will bite your
wallet for at least a dollar each, and in
many cases more.
As a hunter, though, you might be
shooting only a couple of shots per year
and the cost is well worth the results.
The bottom line is that muzzleloading
bullet performance has gone to spaceage heights with "smokin' missiles"
from the charcoal burners.
