bances. Some golden-winged warblers have been found in scattered scrub oak
and pine barrens and wooded wetlands that mimic the vegetative structure found
in young forests. This is particularly true of the Pocono highlands, especially
around Delaware State Forest. Our team of golden-winged warbler surveyors
also has found populations scattered around in game lands and forest lands. For
instance, one of the largest populations can be found in the Scotia barrens of
State Game Lands 176 in Centre County, long known by the state's birders. But,
there also is a population found not far away in State Game Lands 100 that was
not as well-known. Surveys conducted for an Important Bird Area of State Game
Lands 180 - Shohola Falls - in Wayne County revealed a vibrant population there.
More recent surveys also have located golden-wings on State Game Lands 116
and 183. In our southcentral counties, staff has found scattered populations in
and around Tuscarora State Forest and some game lands. By managing wooded
habitat near these known populations, the Game Commission and its partners can
manage for young forest openings more effectively. The disturbance-dependent
golden-winged warbler lives in great rabbit, grouse, and woodcock habitat, where
we have many allies for management on public and private lands.

Filling the Void: Recently, the Game Commission
was approached with an interesting proposition to
receive up to 500 advanced-generation, blight-resistant
American chestnut seedlings from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, provided by The American
Chestnut Foundation. The American chestnut's
story now is pretty well known across the state: its
presence plummeted across the state's landscape
in the early 20th century due to the unintended
introduction of the chestnut blight fungus.
Not coincidentally, the Allegheny woodrat, a
threatened species within Pennsylvania, has
been closely tied to forested areas where
chestnut is found, because the tree provides
an important hard-mast food source for the
woodrat and other small mammal species. With the elimination of chestnut trees
across the state, woodrat populations have suffered. Recently, the Game Commission has been looking for areas to expand and enhance woodrat numbers by
planting these advanced-generation chestnuts with the necessary levels of genetic
diversity and disease resistance to withstand the blight. The only stipulation is
that they be planted within 200 meters of rocky habitat used by woodrats, which
would be a woodrat's primary foraging zone. Once planted, continued monitoring of the woodrats and these newly planted trees can demonstrate the lasting
benefits these trees might contribute to woodrats into the future.
