Commission, has been tracking the trend
of increasing numbers of participants in
furbearer seasons.
Furtaker license sales have increased
steadily since 1999. During the 2014-15
license year, 45,069 furtaker licenses
were sold - the highest number recorded
since 1985.
This trend in trapping and hunting
furbearers is not common everywhere,
Lovallo said.
"In fact, the numbers of trappers and
hunters pursuing furbearers are either
stable or decreasing in many states
throughout the Northeast," he said. "Pennsylvania is different."
The increasing interest in furtaking
might be due, in part, to the fact that new
opportunities have been provided to furtakers during the past 15 years.
During 2000, the Game Commission
initiated the first bobcat hunting and
trapping season since 1970. In 2005,
cable restraints became legal devices for
certified trappers taking foxes and coyotes. The first fisher trapping season was
opened in 2010 and, coming up in February, Pennsylvania trappers will be able to
harvest river otters within the constraints
of a highly conservative trapping season
- the first in Pennsylvania since 1952.
The Game Commission in 2010 also
created a senior lifetime combination
license, which affords holders the privileges provided both by a general hunting
license and a furtaker license. Since its

inception, a greater percentage of seniors
each year have opted for the combination license. In 2014-15, 55 percent of
the lifetime licenses sold were combination licenses. And hundreds of people
each year upgrade their lifetime hunting
licenses to combination licenses.
But these aren't the only reasons numbers are going up.
Trapper numbers were at high levels
during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Those who trapped as teenagers during
those years, would be in their mid-50s
now, and might have more recreational
time as family commitments wane.
"In fact, the greatest proportion of furtakers in Pennsylvania are currently 51 to
55 years old," Lovallo said.
Barry Warner, public relations director
for the Pennsylvania Trappers Association, said the increasing number of trappers in recent years runs counter to the
traditional belief that trapper numbers
only are high when fur prices are up.
"That's not really the case anymore,"
Warner said.
Sociological studies conducted in the
Northeast to assess why trappers trap
report that trappers view trapping as a
principal component of their lifestyle,
rather than a unique recreational activity.
To them, trapping is not unlike cutting
firewood or gathering wild foods.
