T'S LATE DECEMBER
and things aren't quite the same as
they were back on that long-ago
October opener when you first
lugged your archery gear into the
deer woods. You still have those tags to
fill, but Mother Nature has altered significantly the playing field and changed the
ground rules. If you want to make your
second season a winning one, it's time to
change tactics.
At first glance, it would seem that the
odds are staunchly against late-season
bowhunters given the circumstances -
freezing temperatures, a hunter-savvy
deer population, and whitetail numbers
significantly trimmed by earlier hunting
seasons. Rut-driven bucks no longer can
be expected to carelessly wander past
your stand.
Nonetheless, there are other factors
that actually help tip the odds for bagging
a winter whitetail in the hunter's favor.
Staying comfortable
Ever tried to draw and shoot your bow
while chilled to the bone and shaking like
a leaf? If so, I'm guessing the end results
were not pretty.
When it comes to hunting successfully
on Pennsylvania's winter tundra, comfort
is key.
The conventional view of staying
warm in sub-freezing weather evokes an
image of children so heavily bundled in
bulky parkas, leggings, boots, and mittens
they become virtually immobilized.
Imagine a bowhunter dressed in similar
garb. It's a situation that has disaster written all over it.
JANUARY 2016
During the formative years of my bowhunting career - we're talking 40 years
ago - I embarked on a Fulton County
misadventure in a second-season attempt
to fill my archery tag. After a 40-minute
trek up the mountainside, I arrived on
stand a half-hour before daybreak, sweating profusely beneath assorted layers of
thick clothing.
By the time dawn broke, my now cold
and clammy, perspiration-soaked attire
served only to chill me to the bone.
An hour later, a string of whitetails
came by within bow range. Although
amazed that the sound of my chattering
teeth didn't spook them, my fingers and
toes were turning numb and my upper
body was shaking so much it was impossible to draw my bow.
Despite my youthful determination,
I realized it was time to surrender to the
elements and headed back to the truck.
Lessons learned.
Thankfully, advances in lightweightclothing design and technology have
taken great strides in the intervening
four decades and a featherweight winter
wardrobe can keep you cozy warm while
at the same time allowing a wide range of
motion that will not impede the physical
mechanics of raising and drawing your
bow and launching an accurate arrow.
Coats, gloves, boots, hats and pants
designed specifically for winter bowbenders incorporate insulation that helps
wick away perspiration while providing
a waterproof, breathable barrier against
winter's cold, all without the bulk of yesteryear's cold-weather garb.
I'd also recommend a lightweight coat
