chance a hunt and fail with a likely oncein-a-lifetime Pennsylvania bull license.
"I knew I'd probably never have the
chance to do this again and I wanted to
make the most of it," he said.
Scott and his dad spent September and
October scouting in Zone 9.
"We started seeing this bull - he was
the best we were seeing in the area," Scott
said. "We pretty much saw him every
weekend. He had a "crab-claw" antler
on the right side. So we started calling
him the 'Crab-Claw Bull.' He was really
wide, and the shear width and size of him
was massive."
Both men had found their bulls. Now
came the hardest part, taking them.
A Hard Hunt Begins
With the KECA bull tag, Mark could
start his elk hunt before the actual elk
season began on Nov. 2. He and the guides
tried to pattern the bull, and the effort
heightened on the second day of their
hunt, Tuesday, Sept. 22.
"We were walking 4 to 5 miles a day
in rough country," said Mark. "Swamp
up to your knees, blueberry bush flats
and tundra. I was getting up at 3:00, 3:30
in the morning and going to sleep around
11 at night.
"I'll never forget the lack of sleep, and
I took a nap whenever I could!"
Mark's pack was about 22 pounds, and
he carried a .300 Remington Ultra Mag.
He said his only relief came when he
finished drinking the six bottles of water
he carried in his pack each day. It was the
only way to lighten the load.
By Friday, he was wearing down.
"I was getting tired of chasing this
dream around," Mark said. "I began to
think I'd sooner sit and wait for it."
