stalker. So hunting elk, Pennsylvania
style, was something new to him. He
expected the terrain to be more open, to
get more sleep.
But he now knew the price he'd have
to pay to take that bull. He grudgingly
pushed on.
"I wasn't expecting to walk that far,"
Mark said. "But I don't think you'd find
an elk like that anywhere near a road. He
had been deep for a while."
A Friday to Remember
Friday quickly became like the other
days - a pretty serious walking day. The
hunt team got to a pipeline it had been
checking and expected elk to be bedded
there. They weren't.
Then a bull bugled, and Mark's guide
could see it in the woods 200 yards away.
As Mark closed in, he saw that cow with
the yellow collar. Everything appeared to
be falling into place.
On his approach, Mark saw about a
half dozen cows and three or four satellite bulls hanging with the bull he'd been
hunting. Suddenly, the cows spooked and
bolted. The big bull bugled and slowly
tried to get back with the cows.
"I watched him for a few short minutes," Mark said. "I didn't have a shot.
Then my guide Brian cow-called and he
came toward us."
At 120 yards, the bull turned and gave
Mark the broadside shot he was looking for. He found the bull in his Burris
Eliminator and his Remington roared as
a 180-grain handload sped over the tundra
to its mark.
At the shot, the big bull jumped, took
about four steps and fell over.
His KECA tag filled, Mark coveted
sleep and prepared to manage about 400
pounds of elk meat. His nephew, Scott,
however, was still over a month away
from his November hunt.
A Broken Pattern
Scott, with the help of his dad and
guides, worked hard to improve his
chances when the season started. But elk
aren't always the easiest animals with
which to keep up.
"They sometimes move 5 to 10 miles
