In the midst of it all, a third shot
sounds.
"That's one," confirms Dale Wetzel,
of Colonial Park.
A lot of folks will tell you there just
aren't many rabbits anymore, Jim said,
but the truth is they just don't know.
"You take them out with a pack of
dogs, it's a whole different story," said
Joe Ketner, a 33-year-old Harrisburg
resident who at age 16 began hunting
with Jim. "All of a sudden, they're reliving their childhood."
Jim's dogs, and the others that join in
the hunt, are trained to come back when
a chase ends - either by muzzle blast or a
rabbit holing up. The regrouping helps to
result in more chases and sightings, Jim
explained. If the dogs don't come back,
and begin another chase some distance
away, you end up walking past a lot of
good cover and, in all likelihood, at least
a few rabbits.
As the hunters and dogs continue
out the meadow bottom, a rabbit runs
through a clearing, about 50 yards away
- so close to Duke Long, of New Cumberland, "it almost untied his shoelaces,"
Dale says.
"Ova-hee-ah," Dale hollers, calling
the dogs to the track.
The pack follows the scent, but the
rabbit holes up. As dogs and hunters
again scoot their way up the gutter,
however, another rabbit springs, with the
ensuing chase placing a second bunny
into the game pouch of Dale's jacket.
"Some days you can't get 'em, and
some days you can't get away from
'em," he says.
Hunting a gnarly patch of goldenrod
and briar, just over the bank, Dale's next
two harvests would be too big to shove
into the coat.
As the dogs crisscrossed the patch,
running multiple tracks, producing one
shot after another and a total of four rabbits taken, Dale settled into a spot where
three trails cut into the thicket could be
watched. His eyes moved to the top of
a skinny tree that, while not all that tall,
towers over the thicket.
"Is that what I think it is?" he asked in
disbelief, a ringed tail dangling in plain
sight over one of the branches.
Luckily, he always buys a furtaker's
license because of chance encounters
like this that sometimes turn up while
hunting rabbits.
