And I knew chipmunks
also had been out on
a zero-degree day the
same winter.
Perhaps it had
something to do with the
abundant acorn crop that
dropped to the forest floor
months earlier.
In winter, chipmunks
spend most of their time
sleeping, but they wake every
three or four days to eat the food
they have stored in several footballsized chambers in their underground
burrows.
Each chipmunk burrow has a single,
2-inch diameter entrance hole, which
leads to a complex of tunnels up to 100
feet long and 3 feet deep.
The burrow also contains a 24- by
15- by 10-inch nesting chamber, filled
with chewed and crushed leaves. Although, later in the year, female chipmunks use these chambers for their
young, both males and females use
them during hibernation.
Scientists have proven that chipmunks are true hibernators by surgically implanting temperature-sensitive
radio transmitters in them.
When a chipmunk is in a
dormant state, its normal body
temperature and breathing rate
drops significantly. Breathing
drops from 60 or more to fewer
than 20 breaths per minute.

Meanwhile,
normal body temperature drops to a
range between 42 and 45
degrees, down from a range of 96 to
106 degrees.
Unlike woodchucks, which live on
fat they have accumulated before hibernation, chipmunks depend on their food
stores to keep them fed over the winter.
Studies have shown that chipmunks
adjust their inactivity during hibernation based on the size and composition
of their food reserves. The abundant
acorn crop in the fall of 2014, might
have led the chipmunks to emerge at
their usual time in February, despite
the cold and snowy weather.
Males, which emerge at least two
weeks ahead of females, might eat
more than females during hibernation
to ensure they are in top shape for early
spring mating. Females, on the other
hand, might sustain their inactivity and
