Miles away, and fighting an awful war . . .

ENRY MARCHED in column
on a dusty Virginia road. It was
early May 1864 and his regiment
was near Chancellorsville, where the great
Civil War battle had been fought the year
before.
He hadn't been there, but he heard
plenty about it.
Just the night before, men from a New
York outfit had shown Henry and his
comrades where their battle line had stood
when trying to hold off the onslaught
of Stonewall Jackson's soldiers, who
slammed into the Federal flank with their
dreaded rebel yell.
And on a woods road they had traveled
the evening before, he'd seen the bleached
skulls and bones of some Federal soldiers
killed in that battle and hastily buried in
shallow graves that were exposed by the
elements.
It spooked Henry and his fellow soldiers who hadn't yet seen much fighting.
"Some of you fellers are in for the
same treatment," a grizzled old New York
veteran said menacingly to the young
soldiers.
Henry belonged to the 149th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment, affectionately
known as The Bucktails.
These men were hardy lumbermen,
hunters and farmers from the wilds of
north and central Pennsylvania. The men
of the outfit proudly wore the tail of a buck
on their slouch hats or kepis.
Henry hadn't joined until August of
1863. Only 18, he had managed to stay
out of the war and on his parents' small
hardscrabble farm in northern Huntingdon
County, while most of the young men in
the county and surrounding region had
joined up in 1861.
The whole logging crew working near
McAlevys Fort had joined up together
then.
Henry knew some of them well. They
traveled to Camp Curtin in Harrisburg,
and fought bravely in battles during
McClellan's Peninsula Campaign in
Virginia, Antietam and Gettysburg.
Many of them were buried in unmarked
graves far from home, and others had
come home maimed in body and broken
in spirit.
Henry didn't want to leave his beloved
home and mother and father. He wanted
no parts of the terrible war.
He loved to hunt deer and other game
in the fall after the crops were brought
in, but he especially was fond of hunting turkey gobblers in the spring. There
weren't many turkeys in the hills and
woods around his home, but Henry usually would find an old tom in the spring,
if he had the time to hunt.
Henry's father knew how much Henry
enjoyed hunting turkeys, and although
the crops had to be planted when the
dogwoods were in bloom, he often let
Henry hunt several mornings each spring,
whenever he could spare the boy for a
few hours .
Now miles away, it had been nearly
a year since he last hunted. A big tom
Henry had shot in the spring marked his
last time afield before heading off to war
. . . a gobbler called to him.
