raccoon trap (37 percent); No. 2 coil-spring (35
percent); No. 110 body-grip (34 percent); No.
330 body-grip (30 percent); and cable-restraint
(26 percent). For most species, commonly used trap
types were consistent with BMP preferences. The
survey determined 42 percent of trappers had heard
of trapping BMPs. A strong majority (73 percent) of
these trappers supported BMPs for trapping, with 37 percent
expressing strong support. Only 3 percent of trappers opposed
BMPs. Among the trappers who supported BMPs, the most common
reasons given for this support were: animal welfare (34 percent); animal
population management (24 percent); good for the future of trapping
(20 percent); good to have guidelines (20 percent); and help educate the
public and improve the image of trapping (17 percent). Among trappers who
had heard of BMPs, 66 percent currently use them and plan to continue using
them. The development and implementation of BMPs for trapping in America has
ensured that international fur markets remain open to trappers and that trapping
remains a viable wildlife-management tool for wildlife agencies.

Breeding Bird Surveys Count Big: Last summer, I ran my
144th Breeding Bird Survey - making it a personal milestone of
completing a gross of BBS routes. These 24.5-mile road routes
are run annually each summer by competent field ornithologists,
mostly volunteers, to monitor populations of our nesting birds.
Each route comprises 50 stops where every bird observed is
counted in a three-minute stop, most are detected by ear. The
U.S. Geological Survey coordinates these surveys and the Game
Commission plays an important role of ensuring that all routes
are run in the state by competent observers. Agency wildlife
diversity staff run 11 routes, about a tenth of the state's list.
The birds most effectively monitored are the male songbirds
that announce themselves with their distinctive vocalizations
declaring territory. Over the years, I've had many interesting
adventures ranging from curious bears and errant bobcat kittens to washed-out bridges and flat tires. When I've stepped
out of my vehicle to start a count, I've been greeted by rare birds
like "kakking" goshawks or a curious farmer wondering why I am parked at
the edge of his pasture. It has been a wonderful adventure! It's rewarding to know
that contributions to this continent-wide project help us monitor populations of
birds, including the declines of popular songbirds like the wood thrush. By running these routes, we learn where our best opportunities and biggest challenges
lie for future bird conservation.
