look different from the ground than they
do from a tree stand. So, before climbing
down, carefully note the last place the
animal was seen before it disappeared.
FIND THE ARROW
The arrow plays a big role in evaluating
the nature of the hit and finding it, near the
hit site or elsewhere along the track, is key.
Some hunters use lighted nocks to help
them follow and find shot arrows. These
brightly glowing nocks can be seen even
if the shaft's partially buried under leaves.
If a shaft doesn't pass through the deer,
the bright glow of the exposed nock can
help the hunter follow the deer through
vegetation, even if it eventually falls out.
Without an illuminated nock, a lot of
time can be wasted looking for an arrow.
An arrow passing through a deer's
heart or lungs will be covered with bright
red blood from tip to nock, and the hunter
usually can expect a good blood trail.
An arrow covered with dark red blood
indicates it likely passed through the liver,
and unlike a lung or heart shot, a blood
trail might not start for 15 or more yards.
A liver-hit deer will usually run a short
distance and then lie down. It typically
stays down only briefly before getting up
and walking away. It might repeat this,
several more times.
If not pushed by an overenthusiastic
hunter, the deer eventually will expire
- usually within 100 yards of where it
first was hit.
If you suspect a liver-hit, back off
immediately, and wait a minimum of two
hours. Patience will prevail and you will
bring that deer home.
An arrow hitting a deer's paunch might
not have much blood on it, but it will be
coated with stomach matter.
Although there will be some watery
blood to follow, the trail likely will be
sparse. It will consist of small drops and
tiny pinpricks of blood mixed with stomach content. Paunch shots are best handled
by backing off and waiting at least eight
hours. A deer hit in the stomach usually
will lie down within a 100 yards, and will
continue to get up and lie down until it is
