that I also had a hen off to my left. I hoped
she'd help me draw the trio down the slope
into shooting range.
The soft-calling hen yelped several
times over the next hour, and each time
she did, I yelped or clucked, too.
The trio, which seemed to be angling
slightly downhill toward the ravine, disappeared.
I remained hopeful.
Things happened very quickly.
At 7 o'clock, a small turkey with a
stubby, thin beard flew down about 10
yards in front of me.
At first, I thought it was a jake, but it
clearly was a bearded hen - the bird that
had been softly yelping.
A large gobbler that had been silent on
the roost then flew down and landed in an
open spot only 30 yards away.
And the trio of toms was easing out of
the ravine and toward an opening.
Being a 30-year veteran of gobbler
hunting, you'd think I'd have been prepared for action, but I wasn't. My shotgun
was lying across my lap.
I knew shouldering my gun wouldn't
be easy with this many turkeys so close.
Slowly, I brought the 12-gauge to my
shoulder, and the bearded hen and big
20
gobbler began to putt steadily and ascend
the slope. The biggest of the quiet trio then
stepped into the opening and stared at me.
I'd eased off the safety and concentrated on getting my cheek on the stock
and centering the sights, then pulled the
trigger.
At the shot, turkeys filled the air.
But there was no flopping tom.
I couldn't believe I'd missed another
easy shot, and with a sinking feeling, I
approached the opening.
I saw some ferns fluttering behind a
small log; and when I peered over the log,
I saw that big tom, a 17-pounder with an
8-inch beard and 3/4-inch spurs.
He was a fine 2-year-old, probably the
same gobbler I'd missed on Monday.
Bob decided to spend the last day he
had to hunt in a spot where he'd heard
gobblers on a previous hunt.
I wasn't sure it was his best bet because
the turkeys there always seem to head
toward posted ground.
But I got to sleep in until only 7 o'clock
Saturday morning. Max began barking
and I looked out the bedroom window and
saw Bob backing up the driveway.
