Hackenburg said. "When it flew down,
I did two soft calls and let him come
to me.
"It was coming in looking for the
hen, so I did one last call and got my
shotgun up in position to shoot. I was
against a really uncomfortable tree,
but couldn't move because the gobbler
was really close.
"Just then it came into view and I
had the bead on its head when it went
into full strut. As soon as he put his
tail down and stuck his head up, I got
him."
Hackenburg had his triple trophy
with a gobbler that weighed 20 pounds,
had a 9-inch beard and 1-inch spurs.
Taking that gobbler put what
seemed to be the capper on an amazing season, but the year was only going
to get better.
Considering the luck Hackenburg
has had, perhaps it is not that surprising that of the 27,592 applicants drawn
at random for a Pennsylvania elk tag,
his name was drawn for one of the 95
cow tags awarded.
On the opening day of the elk
season, Hackenburg was one of several
elk hunters who had set up in a field
in Zone 2.
"We had been scouting the area
since October and had made friends
with a local guy who helped us locate
some elk," Hackenburg said.
When shooting hours began at 6:18
a.m., sure enough, the elk were right
there where they had been.
"But we couldn't see them clearly
until the fog lifted," Hackenburg said.
At first opportunity, another hunter
fired and the herd separated, giving
Hackenburg a clear shot at a cow
80 yards away. He dropped it with a
double-lung shot, becoming one of 33
successful elk hunters to fill their tag
on the opening day.
The tanned hide from his elk is
displayed in what Hackenburg refers
to as his "Grand Slam Room" along
with last year's bear, buck and gobbler.
After Hackenburg took his elk,
things got back to normal - or at least
what passes for normal - when he took
an 8-point buck with his bow near his
home in Dalmatia.
That gave him even more time to
practice on his turkey calls before the
calendar flipped to 2016, and the spring
gobbler season grew nearer.
