person, got out of the vehicle and identified myself as a Game Commission
officer. I told him to stay where he was
because I wanted to talk to him. But
instead of complying, he laid down on
top of his crossbow.
I guess he thought I didn't see him,
but he was illuminated by my vehicle's
headlights, and my flashlight.
I asked him his name and what
he was doing. He said he couldn't
remember his name, and that he wasn't
hunting.
I told him that I saw the crossbow
and that he needed to stand up and
move away from it.
Instead, he sat up - and pointed the
crossbow at me.
I took cover behind my vehicle, drew
my service sidearm, and ordered him
to put the crossbow down.
He sat still for a short while, then
laid down the crossbow, removed the
bolt and threw it a few feet away.
I secured the bow and verified he
otherwise was unarmed.
After searching him, I moved him
toward my vehicle and had him sit
down against one of my vehicle's tires,
because he was having a hard time
maintaining his balance.
I could detect the odor of alcohol
on his breath and asked if he had been
drinking.
At first he said no, but eventually he
admitted to having six or seven beers.
At that point he was apologizing and
realized the predicament he was in.
I called dispatch for assistance and
they contacted my supervisor, WCO
Matt Teehan, who had been riding with
WCO Ned Kimmel, a cadet at the time.

While awaiting their arrival, the
individual said he'd been drinking with
friends at his home across the field.
After his friends left, he went outside
and saw the two bucks fighting.
He didn't think about the fact it
already was pretty dark out. He just
grabbed his crossbow and decided to
try to get one of them.
He said he didn't know when quitting time was, and didn't know that it
was only antlerless season.
He also didn't care that the deer were
in an area that was off limits to hunting. He said he had hunted there often
in the past.
When officers Teehan and Kimmel
arrived, we administered several standard field sobriety tests. The individual
failed them all.
We placed him under arrest and
transported him to the local hospital,
where his blood-alcohol level was
recorded at 0.173 percent - nearly
twice the 0.1 percent limit at which
hunters are considered intoxicated.
When we called his girlfriend to
pick him up, and I told her what had
happened, she thought we were joking.
She didn't even realize he had left the
house, and thought he was still downstairs with his friends having a good
time.
He was charged with reckless endangerment, hunting under the influence of
alcohol, disorderly conduct and other
hunting-related violations.
This incident is a good example of
the effect alcohol can have on a person's judgment.
Alcohol and hunting certainly do
not mix.
