It usually takes an 8-point
to end up in the record book.

AKOTA SMITH heard a deer grunting, and spotted an 8-point buck.
It stopped to offer him a shot, but
before he could draw his bow, he heard
another deer coming.
"When it stepped out to where I could
see it, I was in total awe," said Smith, who
lives in Elizabethtown, just south of Harrisburg. "The rack was immense, although
I couldn't tell how many points it had."
As it turned out, it had only seven -
with those seven, lengthy points combining to place the buck in the state's record
book with a score of 132 6/8.
It's the first buck with a rack of fewer
than eight points to measure into the
record book in years, and might be the
first 7-point ever.

Now 18, Dakota Smith has been deer
hunting since he was 10 years old.
Participating in the Mentored Youth
Hunting Program, he harvested his first
deer, an 8-point buck, on the opening day
of his first firearms season. With a score
of about 100 inches, the buck would have
made any hunter proud.
Bowhunting is what Dakota really
loves, though, and his roots as a bowhunter run deep.
"When I was about 2 years old, my
dad gave me my first bow and, under his
supervision, I shot at cardboard cutouts of
deer in the yard," he said.
Dakota began bowhunting in his
second season afield, making 2015 his
eighth season as a bowhunter.
He's taken eight deer with his bow -
three bucks and five does, with his first

buck with a bow, a 4-point, coming at
age 12.
After taking his 2012 8-point, which
scored 117 inches, Dakota decided to harvest only mature deer and let the smaller
bucks walk.
Dakota says practice is a key to his
success in bowhunting.
