ranges, on average, including habitat classified as either urban or suburban. Adult
females had the smallest home ranges at
just more than 7 square miles; followed by
juvenile females, about 10 square miles;
adult males, nearly 50 square miles; and
juvenile males, about 54 square miles.
The study found bears will use an average of 42 percent of their annual home
ranges during a 10-day window in June
that's a peak for bear activity.
And, on average, about 68 percent of
bears in the study had public land in their
home ranges, and might well be found
there come hunting season.
That's a key finding. By pinpointing
home-range sizes of suburban bears and
the amount of developed land within
them; by tracking harvests of the bears
studied and confirming they are taken by
hunters at the same rate as bears elsewhere
in the Commonwealth, the study put to
rest the idea bears involved with nuisance
activity near residential areas don't face
much hunting pressure. Instead, the study
found bears near the suburban interface
can be managed just as anywhere else, and
that lengthening bear-hunting seasons in
those areas can influence bear abundance.

However, as revealed in the study,
bears that find their way into developed
areas actually use much larger areas,
meaning harvest regulations are better
applied across wildlife management units
than at a community level. It's likely, too,
that bears moving into suburban areas are
coming from other parts of the wildlife
management unit.
Puhala said extended seasons that
in recent years have allowed properly
licensed deer hunters to take bears during
portions of many deer seasons, have
helped to manage the bear population in
his southwestern Pennsylvania district.
Since their inception, he said, four or
five bears have been harvested annually
in his district alone. Something that had
never occurred previously when hunting
was limited to the traditional and short
bear-only season.
