A buck like this is bound
to attract attention,
and while it took
some sorting out to
determine when, how
and by whom it was
killed, those responsible
were brought to justice
and ordered to pay
thousands of dollars in
fines and restitution.

mount made from this
unlawfully taken trophy
now is housed in the
main lobby at the Game
Commission's Harrisburg
headquarters.
was one of the same trucks I'd seen parked
in Schott's driveway.
The first photos I saw of the buck were
shown to me by a State Police trooper,
who received them through text messages,
and inquired whether I'd heard about the
buck.
When I stopped by to talk to the man
who had sent the texts to the trooper, he
told me he'd heard the buck's rack was at
a local taxidermist.
Apparently Schott - and even his
mother - had been bragging, as well,
about the big deer he had shot during
muzzleloader season.
I tracked down the taxidermist. And
when he pulled out the massive rack, I
could see Gerald Schott's harvest tag was
attached to it.
But the address seemed incorrect. It
was different from the one I'd gotten from
Schott's license earlier in the investigation
-- the home where I'd tried to contact him.
I quickly realized this tag belonged to
Gerald Schott Sr., the father of the man
everybody was saying killed the buck.
When I called back to the Southeast
Region Office, I learned Schott Sr. had a
muzzleloader license. However, he didn't
purchase it until Jan. 1 at 8:50 a.m.

Immediately, I looked at the photos I
had taken of the rack and harvest tag.
The buck was reported to have been
killed at 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 1.
I applied for and received warrants to
search the residences of both Schott Jr.
and Schott Sr.
And I made plans with neighboring
officers to assist, so both warrants could
be served simultaneously.
WCOs Mike Doherty, Eric Anderson
and I served the warrant at Schott Jr.'s
home, while WCOs Derek Daly, Kevin
Clouser, Greg Graham and Deputy Ed
Shutter served the warrant at Schott Sr.'s.
In serving the warrants, we took statements from both men, and the details of
exactly what happened on NewYear's Eve
began to become clear.
Schott Sr. had hosted a New Year's Eve
party, and at about 10 p.m. the doorbell
rang.
A new guest hadn't arrived. Schott Sr.
had a motion detector set up at his backyard feeder, and every time something
came into the feeder, the doorbell would
sound.
On this night, the alarm signaled the
arrival of the giant buck - a 13-point nontypical that later would be measured at
