Most rainy weather requires a hunter
who hits a deer to be ready to recover and
process it quickly.
Failing to recognize this is akin to
saying the quality of your venison doesn't
matter to you. And if it doesn't, then
maybe it's time for you to figure out why
it should.
Safety Matters
Personal safety is another reason I
prefer not to bowhunt in the rain.
Although I have accessories that will
allow my old Loggy tree stand to climb
and descend wet trees relatively safely, I
still would rather stay at home than chance
taking even a slight "slide" on a wet tree.
Hunting from wet trees in a climbing
tree stand is sort of like ignoring those
slippery-when-wet signs along the highway and in public rest rooms.
Whenever anything is wet there is a
greater risk of slipping.
That also applies to climbing into a
hang-on tree stand, up a ladder stand or
up and into a tree stand constructed of
wood. Wood always has the potential to
be slippery in wet weather.
So let's do the math for bowhunting
in the rain: Greater potential for a fall;
increased chance of losing your blood
trail; heightened need to find your deer if
there's warmer weather; need for specialized - and somewhat expensive - gear;
reduced comfort; and reduced ability to
detect approaching deer.
Resource First
Need more? Well, as a veteran huntereducation instructor, perception also is an
important consideration for me.
I dislike the insensitivity to the resource
that hunting in the rain presents. Every
deer taken with a bow is a trophy. And

every deer lost is a tragedy. If you have
taken and lost deer in bowhunting, you've
lived this. Each takes you to the opposing
emotional limits of your hunting comfort
zone. Only one ends well.
But with all things weather-related to
hunting, it's a personal decision to stay or
go. It's no different than deciding whether
to hunt in a heavy snow or ice storm.
It's easy for me today. I accept that
there's always another day, and that hunting is recreation.
Maybe you'll need one of those crossroads days in the rain with your bow to
help you make up your mind.
I, too, thought nothing could get in my
way. But I was wrong. Now, I'm proud to
say, I don't bowhunt in the rain.
