While hunting with a youngster is very
gratifying, it's challenging, too.
There's a lot of preparation involved
with picking out a spot, and a way to get
there and back.
I found a path of travel that Riley could
navigate around bedding and feeding
areas, and I brushed in her blind about
20 yards away from two large apple trees.
We were ready.
But rain and high winds greeted us
on opening morning - hardly ideal
conditions for any bowhunter, let alone
a 9-year-old. Talking the situation over,
Riley and I decided to forgo the morning
hunt, and get out that evening after her
sister's soccer game.
At 4 o'clock, we were settled into our
blind and discussing the different scenarios that might unfold.
The evening was not uneventful.
A button buck walked past us at 20
yards on two separate occasions. And at
one point we saw a jet-black coyote slinking along the bank of the creek.
But we still awaited our buck.
The weather on Monday was no more

accommodating, but we decided to give
it a try that evening.
Not long after settling in, a 7-point
stepped into a small clearing 20 yards
away, but quickly became obscured by
brush.
I grunted and the buck turned 180
degrees, stopping in the center of the
opening, looking for the other deer.
Riley shouldered her crossbow.
"Can I shoot?" she whispered
I told her she could, whenever she
was ready.
She gently squeezed the trigger, planting the bolt directly behind the buck's
shoulder.
The buck kicked his back legs up and
took off, but I knew it was an excellent hit.
Riley's wide eyes fixed upon mine,
beckoning for reassurance.
"You smoked him!" was all I could
manage to say, as I wrapped my trembling
arms around her.
I could feel her shaking with excitement, and I knew it wouldn't be our last
time at this spot, and I'd have a hunting
partner for years to come.
