Since then, we've captured plenty of
bear photos, but our trail camera also
recorded an amazing variety of wildlife
including bobcats, fishers, pheasants
and a barred owl catching frogs. In each
season, animals are attracted to this little
water hole and our camera captures them.
There are other things to keep in mind,
too, when setting up a trail cam.
The direction you aim your camera
is important, especially under a barren
canopy. Sun flare can be an issue. If you
are covering an area that might have sky
in the photo, position your camera facing
north to avoid catching the sun on its
daily track across the southern horizon.
It should eliminate sun flare and provide
better lighting on your subject, eliminating contrast in your image.
If possible, keep the sky to less than
one-third of your image. Too much sky
can fool the light meter in your camera
and lead to under-exposed images.
During summer and fall, take advantage
of the canopy cover that trees provide. It
will filter out most of the sun's negative
influence on your camera and will produce much more pleasing results.
At the same time, know that the movement of branches, grass or vegetation also
can trigger your camera. Most cameras
have sensitivity settings to help minimize
these misfires, but no one wants to check
their trail cam and discover they've cap-

tured photos only of tall grass moving
in the wind.
Look also for vegetation that might
interfere with your camera's coverage,
or be a distraction in the photos your
camera takes.
And lastly, consider that camera
height is extremely important. I can't
stress this enough. For good wildlife
photos, place the camera at your intended
subject's eye level.
Photos taken at eye level always are
much more dynamic than if the camera
is looking down on or angling up to your
subject. The exception is if you're not
trying to shoot straightforward wildlife
photos, but are experimenting with different angles to create unique compositions.
One spring day, I found what I thought
was a fox den at the edge of a farm field. I
set up a camera. Two days later, I checked
the camera but found no fox. Instead,
my images revealed an unusual living
arrangement.
A groundhog was inhabiting the den
by day.
At night, the camera revealed a rabbit
and an opossum using the same hole. The
nocturnal occupants left in the evening at
different times and each returned to the
same hole by daybreak. This is one of
those learning opportunities provided by
trail cameras. It captured three different
critters using the same den site at different times in a 24-hour period.
