be shooting at squirrels.
I quietly left the house and headed to
the barn to help Uncle Elmer with the
morning milking. Shouldering a pitchfork
instead of a rifle, I began mucking out the
Holsteins.
Squeezing between two cows with
the milking machine, Uncle Elmer asked
where Bobby was.
I told him about the squirrel-hunting
trip, lamenting that I'd finally gotten my
hunting license last month, but still wasn't
invited to go along.
Elmer detected the disappointment
in my voice. He told me that, after the
morning frost burned off, I could help him
pick corn - and afterward we'd have time
to chase down a few of the cottontails he'd
seen the day before.
My dismal day was starting to brighten.
The picker dropped the corn onto the
floor of a flatbed wagon, and it was my job
to shovel the ear corn to the back.
Even though the air was brisk, I was
working up a sweat as I moved shovelful
after shovelful.
I took care not to dump any onto the old
Ithaca I had so carefully wrapped up in my
tattered, old, hand-me-down canvas coat.
After what seemed like hours, the old
tractor ground to a halt.
Uncle Elmer backed the wagon to the
corncrib.
"We'll leave this corn for Bobby to
unload when he gets back from huntin',"
Uncle Elmer said. "It's time for us to go
after those rabbits!"
Grabbing the brush-scarred 20-gauge
from the wagon, I found renewed energy.
I pushed two shells into the magazine,
chambered one, and rammed the third
one home.
Walking beside my uncle through the
brittle stalks, my heart and mind were
racing. If I could connect on a few rabbits,
my parents would take my desire to hunt
seriously.
Uncle Elmer stopped abruptly and
pointed ahead. I slowly took another step,
and a rabbit burst down the row.
I pulled up the Ithaca and rolled the
cottontail with one shot.
Working the length of the field, we
kicked out six more rabbits. I was able to
connect on two of them.
Near the end of the field, my uncle told
Author Barbara McCleester with a
small-game haul in her youth, and a
nice buck she took recently. Her love of
hunting has always shined through.
