planting effort ultimately might be needed to ensure the sphagnum, shrub and tree
communities continue to provide habitat for the wildlife that use Wolf Swamp.

Quail Modeling: When you think of building a model car or spacecraft, words
like "detailed" or "tedious" come to mind. It's a drawn-out process. Ensuring each
piece is placed properly sometimes requires dry-fitting to determine where parts
should be before gluing them together. It starts with a pile of pieces, but ends as
something sensible and well constructed. The Game Commission's Bureaus of
Wildlife Habitat Management and Wildlife Management have been collaborating
on just such a model. But it's a computer model seeking to find any available and
potential northern bobwhite quail habitat that might remain within Pennsylvania.
We began with the National Land Cover Database, a map developed from satellite imagery that renders habitat within the Commonwealth into 30- by 30-meter
blocks with distinct classifications, ranging from high-intensity developed to
deciduous forest. We reorganized these database categories by combining several
into six classifications: forest, grassland, shrub, pasture/hay, cultivated crops and
urban. Then, drawing from previous research, we assessed the
bobwhite's ability to occupy such habitat. For example,
bobwhites don't live in highly urban areas, so we
put the upper occupation limit there at less than or
equal to 10 percent. By calibrating the map to show
only certain levels of occupancy within each cover
type, we can see where suitable cover types overlap,
and where suitable habitat remains. With this model,
we looked at every habitat block within the state
in a very detailed examination. Just like building
any other model, sometimes trying to find the
correct fit of parts (cover-type percentages) can
take time. But unlike toy models, which are put
together very specifically, a habitat model for
wildlife can never be 100 percent correct, due
to the many variables used in its construction.
It cannot measure the existing amount of quail
habitat on the ground. But it can show biologists
where to focus their search. Although this model
is still under construction, preliminary results have
shown areas of potential bobwhite habitat still exist in
Pennsylvania. Not surprisingly, the majority remains in
the state's southcentral and southeastern counties, historic
strongholds of quail. With this model's guidance, we are
hoping northern bobwhites can be re-established in
select areas of the state's southern tier.
