powers had adopted the bolt-action rifle
and smokeless cartridge for military use.
Great Britain had the Lee Enfield in
.303 British, Germany had the Mauser
Model 88 in 8mm Mauser, and Norway
and Denmark had the Krag-Jorgensen in
8x58, and later in 6.5x55.
The United States was slow to adopt
a bolt gun because old-thinking military
minds felt repeaters unnecessarily wasted
ammunition, and the cost of re-arming and
retraining troops would be too expensive.
But by 1890, perspectives changed
and the U.S. military began testing both
foreign and domestic bolt-action designs.
In 1892, the Krag-Jorgensen design
was adopted officially as the U.S. military's repeating smokeless rifle, but
manufacturing at the Springfield Armory
didn't start until 1894.
The rifle was chambered for the
rimmed .30-40 Army cartridge, which
used 40 grains of smokeless powder to
throw a 30-caliber, 220-grain round-nose
bullet at about 2,000 fps.
This was a vast improvement over
the previously used Springfield Model
1873 single-shot rifle, known for its
slow-moving rainbow trajectory, and
harder-recoiling, smoke-belching .45-70
cartridge - a 405-grain bullet that moved
at less than 1,300 fps.

The Krag rifle featured a single-locking lug on the bolt face and a five-round
magazine that protruded off the right
side of the action and had to be manually
opened, then closed, when individual
cartridges were loaded.
In attempt to save ammunition, the rifle
also had a cartridge cutoff switch at the
rear left side of the action, which allowed
loading a single cartridge into the chamber
while reserving the rest in the magazine.
The firing pin cocked when the bolt
was lifted, and the extractor claw had a
dual purpose - not only to extract and eject
cartridges, but to aid in removing the bolt
from the receiver.
But the shortcomings of the .30-40
would became apparent during the
Spanish-American War of 1898.
The Spanish used the superior Mauser
Model 93 chambered in the 7x57 Mauser
cartridge, which used a 7mm 175-grain
round-nose bullet delivered at more than
2,300 fps.
The rifle also had an internal-staggered
column magazine that could be loaded
quickly through the top of the action with
a five-round disposable clip.
With the U.S. needing to keep up, the
Springfield Model 1903 rifle and new
