mile or so. Occasional bucket-size
rocks dotted the slope.
Ben kept a sketch of the area that
showed the distances to such markers, which he had carefully stepped
off. There were no laser rangefinders
then.
And the crows that made regular
appearances in the field behind
Ben's home were his favorite targets.
He didn't shoot at crows that
were flying. But when they were on
the ground, he'd hit them with the
accuracy of a military sniper.
Rarely did he miss.
With his Savage 23D equipped
with a 6X scope sporting a crosshair
recticle, Ben was an efficient marksman.
His cartridge of choice was the
Hornet, a small centerfire cartridge
which gave a 45-grain bullet about
2,600 feet per second.
While not truly a high-velocity
cartridge, it was effective to about
150 yards, and maybe 200, depending on how the rifle was zeroed.
Ben would zero his Savage about
1½ inches high at 100 yards and
hold just inside the bottom edge of
the feathers at that range when he
squeezed off a shot.
Thousands of shots had taught him
where to hold at shorter or longer
distances.
I once asked him if a higher-power
scope wouldn't have been better
for crows, but he maintained that

since the Hornet was a short-range
rifle, a more powerful scope wasn't
needed.
I must have looked a bit skeptical,
for he added, "Maybe my eyes are
better than yours."
I had to admit, that was possible.
One fall, Ben was getting ready for
deer season and wanted to be sure
his deer rifle was zeroed. He used
a Model 70 Winchester .270 with a
4X Weaver scope. The scope might
have had a Lee Floating Dot, like the
one on my deer rifle, which always
seemed to pick up moving game
quicker than just with crosshairs.
With his rifle on the bench, a crow
happened to land about 150 yards
away.
That's pretty far for a 4X scope
and such a small target. But one
shot proved the .270 was shooting
just fine.
For Ben, an approaching deer
season also meant sighting in his
longtime favorite .270 Mauser.
With its 6X Lyman scope, it was
made to order for the over-a-haybale rest shooting available in the
area's many cornstubble fields. And
with a 12X target scope mounted, it
easily handled woodchucks in the
summer, and crows anytime.
I always felt it satisfying how a
.270 handled critters as small as crows
or as large as moose. The shooter
