only needed to match the bullet to
the game. And anyone should know
better than to use 130-grain Nosler
Partitions for crows or 100-grain
Spitzers for moose.
And when Ben sighted-in his .270s
- 250 long steps from the table on his
back porch - he truly was ready for
hunting.
Deer were often seen on days they
weren't scared off by the report of
Ben's shooting at other critters. And
there was a good chance if he hunted
off the back porch a buck eventually
would wander into sight.
Then he'd slowly lower the 10x50
Zeiss binoculars he'd brought back
from Germany many years before,
and raise the .270. Slowly. No fast
movement to alert anything.
It happened time and again.
I remember one Wednesday morning the first week of buck season
when a nice 6-point slowly wandered
by at about 135 yards.
When it paused, Ben made one
deadly shot.
Of course, Ben did most of his
shooting at crows, and with the
Hornet.
That Savage 23D was a neat little
bolt-action. I had one myself for a
few years and used it for woodchuck
hunting. A big chuck is a lot tougher
than a crow though, and quite a few
times they got into their holes even
after I thought I'd made a solid hit.
On the other hand, C.S. Landis,
who is said to have taken more than
10,000 chucks, shot almost all of
them with a Hornet.
Ben wasn't sure how many crows
he might have taken with the Hornet.

He wasn't even sure for how many
years he had shot the Hornet.
He'd heard two friends talk about
their trips to the Dakotas hunting prairie dogs say it was about time for new
barrels. They said their barrels didn't
last too long with the heavy shooting
they got out there.
With its ordinary velocity, was it
possible to wear the Hornet's barrel
out? He'd never heard of that.
But he'd noticed for some time that
he'd miss a few shots he expected to
make.
And when he replaced his beloved
Hornet, those misses again would
disappear.
When I think about Ben's exceptional marksmanship, it's hard to
believe he blamed himself for the
misses and never realized it was the
barrel's fault.
Getting a new rifle also would
make it easy to get a faster cartridge
that was more accurate at longer
ranges.
The Remington .222, for instance,
gave 3,200 fps. Equipped with a
10X scope - maybe one of those
long-target types with exceptionally
accurate quarter-minute clicks - this
additional velocity could translate to
increased range.
If he could count on making
most 135- to 150-yard shots with
the Hornet, he should do OK at 200
yards with a .222.
A .22-250 would allow for reaching out even farther, though it's hard
to imagine any rifle consistently
being on crows at 250 yards.
But for all the upside of a new rifle,
Ben was sorry to give up the Hornet.
