Poole's work influenced many fields. He was
a writer, painter, sculptor and conservationist.
He also was one of Hawk Mountain's earliest
champions and its third life member.

Poole accepted the challenge to educate
a largely hostile readership about the
importance of hawks in ecosystems.
"The writer is not a fanatic on the
hawk question. Well does he realize that
the long-tailed accipiters, the Cooper and
sharp-shinned hawks, and the goshawks,
prey on bird life, but he is firmly of the
belief that sportsmen, farmers, foresters
and conservationists can get together on
a middle ground, and see the complicated
problem of wildlife relationships as it
is," Poole wrote. "Blind partisanship and
such statements as, 'The only good hawk
is a dead hawk,' achieve nothing."
Poole was born in 1892 in HaddonFEBRUARY 2017
field, N.J., but grew up in Philadelphia,
where he studied art formally at the
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts
and achieved recognition for his ornithological drawings as a Jessup Scholar
at the Academy of Natural Sciences in
Philadelphia. His artistic abilities came
to him early.
Poole always had an interest in the
outdoors, according to his son, Joe, 72,
who still lives in the Reading area his
father called home for most of his life.
But Joe emphasized, Dad hunted only
"to collect skins."
In the tradition of John J. Audubon,
Poole and other wildlife artists relied
on bird skins to match the wing and tail
feather counts and plumage colors of
their paintings' subjects.
"Dad would start a lot of his paintings
by getting skins sent in, so he could see
the actual feathers," Joe recalled. "Once
color cameras and telephoto lenses
became available, collecting skins was no
longer necessary. It was frowned upon,
because so many birds had disappeared."
SUMMIT SLAUGHTERS
Scientific collecting is what drew Earl
Poole to Hawk Mountain in northern
Berks County. Working from 1920 to
1957 at the Reading Public Museum,
Poole knew of the hawk shoots occurring
along the Kittatinny Ridge every October,
and went there to collect specimens for
the museum.
Seeing the slaughter firsthand, Poole
was driven to begin work in 1929 to
collect data that could stop the shooting. He was not the first, nor the mostrecognized naturalist to draw attention
