Waterfowl Band Recovery:
Waterfowl banding helps
determine from where waterfowl
harvested in Pennsylvania comes.
Each year, birds banded
locally and in other states
or provinces are recovered in
Pennsylvania, then the yearly
totals of recovered birds are compared
to long-term totals. From 1990 to 2015,
11,357 Canada geese, 4,913 mallards and 1,381 wood ducks were directly
recovered in Pennsylvania and identified by their bands. The recovery of banded
Canada geese in Pennsylvania shows 83 percent of birds recovered also were
banded in Pennsylvania, meaning the majority of the harvest is made up of resident
birds. Ontario, New York and Quebec followed as the largest population sources
for geese harvested in Pennsylvania. Ontario birds included birds orginating in
southern Ontario, and in northern Ontario in the area along the Southern James
Bay. The Akimiski Island, located in the Nunavut territory in northern Canada,
also contributed to geese harvested in Pennsylvania. Bands from Quebec primarily
were comprised of Atlantic population birds banded in the Ungava and Hudson
Bay area. Mallard and wood-duck band recovery indicates locally produced birds
also are important to the harvest of both species in Pennsylvania, Seventy-nine
percent of banded mallards and 86 percent of banded wood ducks harvested in
Pennsylvania were banded here, as well. Ontario, Quebec and New York also are
important population sources for Pennsylvania-taken mallards. New England, and
especially New York, New Jersey and Vermont are important population sources
for wood ducks harvested in Pennsylvania. Ontario and Quebec are important
population sources for Pennsylvania-harvested wood ducks, as well.

Goshawk Nest Discovery: The goshawk is one of the state's rarest and most
difficult species for which to conduct survey work. Over the years, I have found
several goshawks during breeding season, but very few nests. So when one is
found, we protect it, especially if it's on state or federal lands. I had found a
goshawk nest in 2007 near a high-elevation swamp, but received no follow-up
reports since. Returning to the tree after a nine-year absence, I looked for evidence
of a hawk nest, but found none. They had abandoned it. The area had several large
