At 10 o'clock, I climbed down to try
another spot.
I hadn't gone far, when I heard my
father coming on his side-by-side ATV.
Dad drove over, reporting he'd seen a
couple bucks that morning, but all were
too far away. We decided to ride out to
a couple of other stands we have on the
property, and finish our morning hunt
there.
I told Dad the bucks should be chasing does, though I worried the warming
temperatures might suppress deer activity.
Riding up a hill on the ATV, however,
we spotted a legal buck chasing a doe.
We hoped one of us would get to see
the buck again once we settled into our
stands. Two or three minutes after climbing into my stand, I saw another buck. It
was smaller, but I was glad the bucks were
on the move in the warming temperatures.
After an hour, though, neither Dad
nor I had seen another deer and we'd had
enough.
The ATV was parked near my stand
and Dad walked over so we could ride
back to the house for lunch before heading
back out to hunt that afternoon.
I asked Dad to make a stop on the way
back to show me a new property line from
a recent survey.
We've never really hunted this section
of the property, though we did place some
stands there this summer. Maybe we'd get
lucky and see some deer. We headed up
the hill to the corner of the property.
It was 11:45 when we got there and
split up to look for the property corner.
It's a good thing I had my crossbow
with me.
Headed My Way
Dad was walking through some thick
cover about 75 yards away and downhill
from me when he jumped a big buck, and

hollered it was headed my way!
The buck ran to me and stopped within
20 yards, looking back in the direction
where he'd been bedded. He had no idea
I was there.
But the buck had stopped in some tall
weeds and saplings, and I'd need to move
just a little to get a shot.
As I shouldered my Stryker crossbow,
the buck glimpsed the movement and
walked ahead a few steps.
I still didn't have a clear view of the
buck's rack. I could see only its right side,
and spotted three long points.
I figured he was a big 8- or 10-point.
Maybe it was a good thing I underestimated him. If I knew how big his rack
